FROM THE UNDERGROUND — 1987 TO 1991
Disharmonic Orchestra formed in Klagenfurt, Austria, in 1987. The first demos, The Unequalled Visual Response Mechanism and Requiem for the Forest, followed in 1988 and quickly established the band’s place in the emerging European extreme-metal underground.
After sharing the stage with fellow Austrians Pungent Stench, Disharmonic Orchestra signed with the still young Nuclear Blast label. In 1989, both bands released their now cult split LP, followed by the Successive Substitution EP.
The debut album Expositionsprophylaxe appeared in 1990, combining death metal, grindcore and an increasingly unconventional approach to songwriting.
That same year, Disharmonic Orchestra travelled to the United States for a self-organised tour, playing alongside bands such as Immolation, Suffocation, Cannibal Corpse and Autopsy.
35 Years anniversary of "Not to be undimensional conscious"
In 1992, Disharmonic Orchestra radically expanded their musical language with Not to Be Undimensional Conscious.
Recorded at the legendary Sunlight Studio in Stockholm with Tomas Skogsberg, the album moved far beyond traditional death metal. Complex rhythms, independently moving bass lines, jazz and fusion influences, dissonance, groove and atmospheric passages created a sound that was difficult to categorise.
Released during the same era in which bands such as Atheist, Cynic and Death were redefining the boundaries of extreme metal, Not to Be Undimensional Conscious represented a distinctly European and unmistakably Disharmonic Orchestra approach to progressive and experimental death metal.
Three and a half decades after its release, Not to Be Undimensional Conscious has increasingly been recognised as an unusually forward-thinking record from the formative years of progressive and experimental death metal.
Metal Archives reviewers rate the album exceptionally highly and describe it as an “idiosyncratic surrealist extreme metal masterpiece”, while another calls its drumming some of the most innovative death-metal work of 1992.
Metal Music Archives describes its combination of death metal, jazz-influenced rhythms, funk-like bass and experimentation as music that goes considerably beyond conventional death metal.
Avantgarde-Metal.com retrospectively called the album “one of the most subversive albums that death metal has ever seen.”
And a 2024 Sputnikmusic review still expresses disbelief at how early the record appeared, praising the strange but convincing collision of jazz, death metal, groove and experimentation.

2017 to 2027
With Fear of Angst in 2016, Disharmonic Orchestra returned with a new studio album that once again combined the band’s trademark unpredictability, progressive structures, groove and experimental approach to extreme metal.
The following years brought Disharmonic Orchestra back to stages across Europe, alongside archival and retrospective releases documenting different periods of the band’s history.
The live release Raw appeared in 2017, followed by Repulsive Overtones? 1988–1989 in 2023, bringing together material from the band’s earliest underground years.
In 2026, the original 1989 split material with Pungent Stench returned on vinyl together with previously unreleased live recordings — connecting the band’s beginnings directly with the present.

The anniversary shows will feature a special old school set spanning all Disharmonic Orchestra albums, with a strong focus on the band’s first three landmark releases: the Pungent Stench / Disharmonic Orchestra Split, Expositionsprophylaxe and the groundbreaking Not to Be Undimensional Conscious.
